Safety Tips To Help Distracted Teen Drivers Avoid Accidents

You just turned sixteen, have gotten your driver’s license from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and you are ready to hit the road, but are you fully prepared to be a safe driver on the road and avoid getting into an automobile accident?

Our automobile accident attorneys believe that teenage car accident statistics are the highest, because teen drivers are the least experienced and tend to make more mistakes than older drivers.  These mistakes can cause personal injury and do a large amount of property damage.

Teenage car accidents also have a higher chance of turning into fatal auto accidents and unfortunately, they often do take a turn for the worse, leaving 100 of wrongful deaths of young motorists each year.

According to the USAA Educational Foundation, half of all car crashes happen due to car drivers being distracted and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s data agree with this, saying how distracted driving is number one cause of teenage auto accidents in America.

The most common distractions that lead to car accidents are talking to other passengers, fumbling with the stereo, eating or drinking, and using a cell phone in some capacity.

If you are a new driver or have a teenager who just got their driver’s license, here are some tips for avoiding a car accident due to distracted driving:

  • Pay attention and stay focused on the road
  • If you are tired, do not drive
  • Keep conversation with other drivers to a minimum
  • Get your passengers to change the stereo settings for you
  • If you need to talk on your cell phone, pull off the road to a safe place and use your cell phone when you have stopped your car.

Our automobile accident attorneys believe that every driver on the road, whether young or old, experienced or fresh, should use these tips to avoid driving while distracted and therefore, avoid getting into a car accident.
