Police chases usually only have one party that wins: the police. If you think that you can outrun the authorities, our car accident attorneys in San Diego want to tell you to think again. Police chases trigger a series of events leading up to personal injuries or loss of life.
The San Diego Union Tribune has reported that a former professional race car driver has been arrested for speeding and causing a police chase from Orange County down to San Diego’s University City. The driver, manning a Corvette, alluded authorities at speeds of 130 miles per hour.
A police chase starts in Orange County and ends in San Diego.
In the early morning hours of May 17, 2010, the police began their pursuit out of Orange County for the Corvette and the driver who was speeding behind the wheel. Both cars then headed south on Interstate 5 reaching San Diego at around 3 a.m.
[UPDATE]: The motorist has been identified as former NASCAR driver, James Neal, who raced at the old Ascot Park track in Gardena during first half of the 1980s.]
Neal took the southbound connection on Interstate-805 and his car’s engine gave out right around the La Jolla Village Drive off ramp. Close to thirty-minutes after he entered San Diego, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) had caught the driver in University City.
The CHP has stated that Neal violated a traffic signal, which is what started the police chase when the ex-NASCAR driver refused to pull over.
[UPDATE #2]: Neal pleaded guilty on Tuesday to leading the sheriff’s deputies on the freeway chase. He was sentenced to a month in jail and probation after entering his plea on charges of felony evasion while driving recklessly.
