The Schizophrenic Driver: An Open Road For Car Accidents?

We can all agree that there are many different types of drivers on the road—good and bad, safe and reckless—but vary rarely do we seriously call into question a person’s mental stability in terms of being a good driver who does not cause car accidents.

Schizophrenic Drivers Cause Car AccidentsOur car accident attorneys know that drivers who drive under the influence of drugs (prescription or illegal) while behind the wheel have the potential to cause car accidents that can cause injuries or wrongful death in fatal auto accidents.

Then again, just because a person is deemed “sane” does not mean that they are better at preventing car accidents and the injuries associated with them.

So would a driver diagnosed as a schizophrenic be a safe and considerate driver or would their mental state categorize them with the group of dangerous drivers who cause automobile accidents?

Ronald Pies, a psychiatrist, wrote a newspaper column about the doubts he had when a former patient, Harry, who he had treated for schizophrenia and then moved to the outside world, asked Pies to sign off on his driver’s license so he could drive a car on dates.

“I was caught between two conflicting visions: one of my patient obeying some malign voice behind the wheel, with who knows what consequences [such as a fatal car accident]; and another of a young man yearning to get his life back,” wrote Pies in an article.

The issue of schizophrenic drivers can be viewed like this: as motorists who avoid creating car accidents because they have to jump through so many hoops to get their licenses or as motorists who listen to the impulses in their head and ends up causing a fatal auto accidents.

Our car accident attorneys believe that any driver should be tested for mental stability before cruising around the open road.  We should all be safe drivers and do everything in our means to prevent car crashes from happening, no matter what frame of mind we happen to be in.

That does not sound too crazy, does it?
