Movie Star’s Wrongful Death Can Teach Parents A Lesson

David Carradine, an American actor best known for his work in the 1970s television show “Kung Fu”, suffered a wrongful death on Wednesday June 3, 2009 when his body was found in a Thailand hotel room.  His wrongful death might attributed to possible autoerotic asphyxiation which refers to intentionally cutting off oxygen to the brain for increased sexual arousal.

A wrongful death can occur at any moment because accidents happen every day of the year.  This time, tragedy struck a famous actor who was well-liked and respected.

On June 4, 2009 Carradine was found dead in his room in central Bangkok, Thailand.  A police official said Carradine was found hanging by a rope in the room’s closet, and his body was found curled up in the wardrobe with a shoelace tied around his neck (though it is not known if a spinal cord injury is directly related to his death).

While it is currently unproven as to how exactly this all occurred, Carradine’s untimely wrongful death can teach many parents the warning signs of autoerotic asphyxiation, therefore preventing a trip to the emergency room for medical treatment or  a wrongful death from happening to their children.  Everyone, especially parents of teenage boys, should be aware of the extreme danger of autoerotic asphyxiation, also known as breath control play.  Studies have shown that the practice results in as many as 250-1000 deaths in the United States alone.

Some important warning signs for parents and teachers to look out for are:

  • Unexplained marks on necks
  • Often but not always women’s clothing and/or pornography in closet, under bed
  • Short ropes, padded ropes, neckties tied in odd knots
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Complaints of headaches
  • Locks on bedroom doors
  • Evidence of repetitive hanging such as unexplained marks on the neck or broken or multiple rope abrasion on closet rods
