No DUI For Dennis Quaid

“No DUIs for Dennis!”

The paparazzi chanted this motto as actor Dennis Quaid made his way to a taxi cab last week in Hollywood upon leaving a restaurant after having a few too many drinks.  However, the scene almost did not play out in a positive light.  On the first attempt of leaving the restaurant, Quaid got behind the wheel of his car and could have potentially received a DUI were it not for the Los Angeles Police Department talking him out of it.

Quaid originally got in the driver’s seat of his the his car while intoxicated and was about to drive off when an LAPD patrol vehicle rolled up and urged the G. I. Joe star to reconsider his actions.  After speaking with the officers, Quaid and his passengers returned to the restaurant to wait for a cab.

Our DUI accident attorneys know that one of the most wreckless things you can do is to drink a lot of alcohol and then decide to drive a car.  You are putting yourself and others at risk of causing a car accident that involves severe personal injuries or even wrongful deaths.  If you have been drinking, do not drive — it is as simple as that.

Most of us are not celebrities and we do not have police officers who are watching guard over our judgement calls.  The officer’s voice telling Quaid to ”get out of the car” should be in the back of our heads if we ever find ourselves drunk and about to put the keys in our ignition.

Eventually, a cab arrived and took Quaid and his entourage away, with onlookers applauding the actor’s smart decision to avoid a DUI.  Some even joked that he did not want to end up like fellow actor Mel Gibson, who was arrested for DUI back in July of 2006.

For those of us out there that look  up to celebrities as role models, we can say that Quaid made a good example of a smart choice.  If you are going to drink, do not drive.  Have a friend or family member drive you home or get the number of a local cab company to come pick you up.  Should you still find yourself having problems with drinking and driving, know that there are ways you can get help for DUIs in the future.

GOOD example??? Since when is getting drunk at age 55 and then getting behind the wheel of your car with every intention to drive a good example? Sorry, but Dennis Quaid should be so totally ashamed of himself. He should have been arrested! Shame on him and shame on you for applauding celebs who want to drive around drunk!

AgainstDrunkDrivers, you’re exactly right. We didn’t mean to say that his initial decision to drive drunk was smart, only that his second decision (to get out of the car and hail a cab) was the right one. Quaid made a terrible choice to get into the car in the first place, but we’re glad that (thanks to the work of a smart police officer) he did not go through with driving home. But you’re right, he should never have gotten behind the wheel in the first place — that was a terrible decision — and he’s lucky he was not arrested by that officer. Not a lot of people would be that lucky…
