Paralysis More Prevalent For Car Accident Injuries

A new study shows how about 5.6 million people in the U.S. have some form of paralysis and nearly a quarter of them have suffered spinal cord injuries.

Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, which released the report, put a number on the American population who suffers from movement-limiting disorders due to spinal cord injuries (SCI), such as those caused by traffic accidents. Earlier data on paralysis and spinal-cord injury were significantly smaller, but they relied on narrower data-collection techniques.

Our firm’s San Diego personal injury lawyers know from experience that spinalcord injuries caused through auto accident can lead to pain and suffering.  Cases of paralysis, such as paraplegia and quadriplegia, can change an injured person’s life forever.

This study was conducted to raise awareness about the prevalence of paralysis and spinal cord injuries in hopes to gain funding for new forms of medical treatment.

“There has not been a good way, previously, of determining the number of people who live in this country with a range of conditions like this,” says Gloria Krahn, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The report indicates that many respondents had less-severe cases of paralysis, but about half of the injured persons surveyed had a lot of trouble moving or were completely unable to do so.  They were categorized as having “paralysis” or “being paralyzed.”

About half of those who suffered from paralysis said the cause was stroke or spinal cord injury and nearly 7% of those with paralysis got it from a injury they received during a freak accident.
