Potential Design Defects In Toyota Prius?

The Toyota Prius is a fuel efficient car that saves the many Americans who own one lots of money on gas.  But the price of gas is far from Pruis owners’ minds as a design defect in the car has led to unintended acceleration for many drivers — a major concern for personal injury firm.

Our San Diego car accident attorneys know that manufacturers are required by law to design and engineer cars that meet a minimum safety standard, ones that are free of products liability.  Cars have hundreds of parts that could potentially contribute to serious injury or wrongful death in automobile accidents, and even the simplest of design defects can lead to a car accident.

The Toyota Prius has a design defect which causes unexpected accelerations.

All across the nation stories about unintended acceleration in the Toyota Prius have surfaced, and many owners have been involved in car accidents due to the design defect.

One driver who was adversely was Elizabeth James, who bought her Prius in 2005.  She was driving towards Denver when, upon hitting her brakes, her Prius suddenly accelerated to speeds of 90 miles per hour.  James gripped the wheel with both hands, drove around a car in the slow lane on the shoulder of the interstate, exited a ramp, ran a stop sign and eventually landed in a river

James ended up with an injured back and legs because of the sudden acceleration of her Prius.

Another story involving unintended acceleration happened in Tacoma, Washington.  Prius owner Richard Bacon was merging into traffic and crossed a patch of snow when his wheels locked up throwing him and his wife toward a 30-foot drop-off down the side of the road.

“Only a snow bank kept my wife and me from serious injury or death,” he said.

If more Prius drivers are experiencing these experiences, then something needs to be done about this.  The car accident attorneys at our San Diego firm know that products liability laws can be very confusing.  That is why it pays to hire an experienced auto accident lawyer to handle a Toyota Prius design defect claim or medical bills you may have that were caused by a defective product.

One Response to “Potential Design Defects In Toyota Prius?”

  1. Barry Karlin says:

Two weeks ago, my wife shifted our Prius from reverse to drive, keeping her foot on the brake. The car roared through a fence, down a hill and struck a tree 40 down the hillside. The car was totaled and my wife injured her shoulder. She is still experiencing emotional trauma.
