Bus Accident Caused By Driver Fatigue

A cross country bus rounded a bend on a rural two-lane Utah highway at an estimated 88-92 miles per house, broke through a guardrail and rolled down an embankment, causing nine people’s deaths in a fatal automobile accident.

In the darkness and poor weather of the Utah mountains the bus driver took a wrong turn, taking the bus down a path that was an unplanned travel route when the fatal auto accident happened.  Once off the road, the bus’ roof was sheared off and all but two of its 53 occupants were ejected.

Our wrongful death lawyers know how dangerous it is to travel in autos without seatbelts and which are highly unsafe in automobile accidents.  Aside from property damage and personal injury to the passengers, loss of life can tragically occur to anyone involved.

Along with the nine fatal accidents there were 43 injured persons who suffered personal injury and emotional trauma.  And what was the culprit behind this auto accident and nine wrongful deaths?

Fatigue.

The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the cause of the auto accident was fatigue that led the 71-year-old bus driver to misgauge his speed and halted his reaction time.

In an unexpected move, however, the board also voted unanimously to place partial blame on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, citing that the agency failed to administer the correct motor-coach safety recommendations.

Bad weather conditions hindered medical helicopters’ response to the fatal auto accident and it was an hour after the auto accident that the first emergency crew arrived.  The nearest hospital with a trauma unit was about 190 miles away in Flagstaff, Arizona.
