Bicycle Accident Information

A bicyclist is fatally injured every six hours in the United States. In 2004, 725 bicyclists were killed in auto accidents, and 41,000 bike riders suffered injuries as the result of automobile accidents. 18% of those fatally injured were under 14 years old.

Please remember, a bicycle is a vehicle. Bicyclists share a complex traffic environment with other larger forms of transportation.  As a bicyclist, you are more susceptible to severe injury while sharing the roadways with automobiles.

Each year in California, over one hundred people are killed and thousands more are injured in bicycle collisions. Bicycling can be safer for all by observing the following safety tips (see Disclaimer, below):

  • » Always wear a helmet.
  • » Obey all traffic controls.
  • » Ride your bicycle near the right-hand edge of the road.
  • » Never carry another person on your bicycle.
  • » Always use hand signals when turning or stopping.
  • » Look out for cars at cross streets, driveways, and parking places.
  • » Give pedestrians the right-of-way.
  • » Keep your bicycle in good condition.
  • » Be careful when checking traffic and don't swerve when looking over your shoulder.
  • » Always ride carefully.
