Motorcycle Accident Information
Each year in the United States, thousands of motorcyclists are injured and killed on streets and highways. According to reports from the NHTSA , there were over 4,000 motorcycle accident deaths in the United States in 2004; California leads the nation with 432 deaths. Three out of every four motorcycle accident collisions involve another vehicle such as a car, truck or SUV. Studies have shown that in most cases, the driver of the other vehicle was to blame for the accident. 67% of motorcycle accidents were caused by the operator of the other vehicle violating the right of way of the motorcyclist. The most common reason for these accidents is the failure of the motorists to see the person riding the motorcycle.
When someone is involved in a motorcycle accident, there is almost always an injury that occurs. Unlike in a car or truck, there is no protective metal surrounding the cyclist. According to the Hurt Report, a study researching motorcycle accident causes, 98% of motorcycle accidents involving other vehicles resulted in injury to the cyclist. 45% of the injuries were serious in nature. Not surprisingly, injury severity increased when alcohol or speeding was involved. As expected, the most serious injuries involved the head, neck and chest areas. In the study, only 40% of those motorcycle riders involved in an accident were wearing helmets. Just as expected, studies show that wearing a helmet greatly reduces the injury and chance of death in motorcycle accidents. Protective clothing such as gloves and jackets also greatly reduce the extent of injuries. Some of the serious injuries that motorcyclists may sustain include:
- Brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries and other back injuries
- Broken bones
- Road rash
