No Insurance Now Means High Medical Bills & Nagging Injuries Later

Posted in Personal Injury, Thursday, July 30th, 2009

With youth comes a sense of indestructibility — that Nothing or no one can get to you, not even injury or illness.  In fact, most young adults under 30 have never fought disease or physical disability.

With that in mind most younger individuals opt not to get pricey health insurance as rent and living expenses take precedent over the possible need for prescriptions and doctor visits when personal injury happens.  That coupled with the current recession and the number of uninsured is expected to grow.  A report in Health Affairs notes that the increasing unemployment rate coupled with the rising cost of insurance could elevate the total number of uninsured Americans to 52 million by 2010.

Our firm’s San Diego personal injury attorneys know that accidents that require medical attention happen daily.  Just because you are young does not mean you might not get injured in a car accident or pedestrian accident that may not be your fault.  Each year, there are over six million auto accidents in the United States.  An estimated 40,000 people are killed in fatal car accidents, while as many as three million people are injured in auto accidents.

One of the main problems keeping young adults from health care is that most young adults have incomes 200 percent below the federal poverty level, according to the Urban Institute report.  Yet some how, only 13 percent of young adults are eligible for Medicaid or other public programs that help the underprivileged pay their medical bills.

It seems that many young adults go without insurance because they fall into one of several gaps in the current health care system.  Most insurance policies terminate coverage for dependent children at either the age or 19 or when they complete (graduate or drop-out) of college.  Without their parents’ insurance, young adults are left to find their own coverage.

We hope that something will be done about this.  Our personal injury attorneys in San Diego believe that health coverage is an essential form of coverage for all individuals.  If you or a loved one suffer a debilitating injury and are not insured, many doctors will not even see you, and if they do see you, you could be left to foot the bill for some high medical bills.

States Fight Over Medical Bills From Medicaid Expansion

Posted in Personal Injury, Monday, July 6th, 2009

There have been new proposals in the House and Senate which would in effect expand the Medicaid program to cover at least a third of the nation’s 46 million uninsured.

Medicaid, the health-care program for eligible individuals and families with low incomes and resources who cannot pay large amounts of medical bills if suffering from a personal injury, is funded through a combination of federal and state tax money.

Medicaid Funding Revised In Nevada For Those Paying Medical Bills

Posted in Personal Injury, Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Medicare was created with the Social Security Act in 1965.  The program was an effort to provide health insurance for Americans over the age of 65.  Medicaid provides health insurance to help eligible individuals and families with low incomes and resources pay their medical bills.

Nevada government worked on a new $900 million Medicaid budget.  The new budget takes about $56 million from an account set up to help needy people who are hurt from personal injury as a result of a car accident.

Our personal injury lawyers know how hard it is for some people to get medical treatment because of the high costs in medical bills.  Getting treatment for personal injuries is important because untreated injuries can get worse as time progresses.

You may have questions as to how to get medical treatment for your injuries.  Trying to get medical treatment can be confusing, and our personal injury attorneys have a helpful medical treatment resource page to help you answer some of your questions. Read the full article →

Are All Personal Injuries The Same? Hospital Medical Bills Say So

Posted in Personal Injury, Friday, May 15th, 2009

Imagine yourself over the age of 65.  If you go into a hospital suffering from a personal injury, there is a chance that you will not be treated properly for your personal injury as a result of plans to keep Medicare payments the same.

The plan is designed to keep Medicare payments flat beginning in the fall in an effort to keep hospitals from exaggerating how sick patients are from illnesses and personal injuries in order to get higher paybacks.  Read the full article →
