If you are one of the over 22,000 people who bought a new car with the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program, consider yourself lucky to have a new car from the program designed to put new fuel-efficient cars on roads with the safety features to prevent car accidents.

Because on July 30, 2009, the White House said it was reviewing the government’s program with concerns the $1 billion budget for rebates for new car buys has been all used up in just one week.

The ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program was designed to put more fuel-efficient, safer cars on the road and prevent car accidents, but are the funds tapped out?

As car accident lawyers, we support any legislation with goals of reducing the number of car accidents every year.  Newer cars not only have the fuel-efficiency to keep drivers on roads longer, but they also come with some of the new safety features to prevent injury or wrongful death in car accidents.  Side airbags, for example, can prevent blows to the head preventing the possibility for traumatic brain injuries.

A concern was raised after dealers learned they may have used all the money set aside by the program.

The Car Allowance Rebate System, known as CARS, provided $3,500 or $4,500 toward these new vehicles, but a survey of 2,000 dealers by the National Automobile Dealers Association found that about 25,000 deals were not approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On August 3, 2009, the government will be discussing the possibility of allocating an additional $2 billion for more purchases to be made with the use of this program to put more fuel-efficient, safer cars on the roads.

As car accident lawyers, we believe the government should do whatever it can to prevent injury or wrongful death.  Remember car accidents are one of the leading causes of wrongful death in the U.S.
